iPhone Duo First Look: Apple's $1,999 Foldable Is Real
Apple's first foldable looks polished on paper, but at $1,999 with no telephoto and first-gen hinge risk, waiting for hands-on testing and SA pricing is the sane move.
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026: a book-style foldable with 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer OLED displays, A20 Pro chip, Touch ID, and a $1,999 starting price. Pre-orders open 16 October, sales start 23 October.

Quick verdict
Who it's for
iPhone loyalists who want a folding big screen now and accept first-gen risk — everyone else should wait for hands-on reviews and confirmed SA pricing.
The good
- Big-screen multitasking in an iPhone: 7.6-inch 120Hz inner OLED
- A20 Pro with dual Neural Engine should age well
- Titanium build, IP68, and MagSafe/Qi2 25W support
The bad
- $1,999 starting price before SA markup — first-gen tax is real
- No telephoto lens and no variable aperture from the 18 Pro
- 254g and 11.3mm folded is a pocket commitment
This is not a hands-on review. No media outside Apple has spent real time with the Duo yet — it goes on sale 23 October. This is a first look based on Apple’s announced specs and product pages, written so you can decide whether to care before pre-orders open 16 October.
The short version: Apple finally made a foldable, priced it like one, and left the camera system one lens short of the 18 Pro.
What Apple announced
On 9 September 2026 Apple announced the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It is Apple’s first foldable phone: a book-style device with a 5.4-inch outer display for phone tasks and a 7.6-inch folding inner display for reading, video, and multitasking. Two colours: Night Sky and Star White.
Pricing is blunt: $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. That makes it Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever, above even the Pro Max. Pre-orders open Friday 16 October at 5am PT, with availability from Friday 23 October via Apple, carriers, and partner stores.
Displays and design
The inner 7.6-inch panel is a Super Retina XDR OLED at 1878x2670 (430ppi) with ProMotion up to 120Hz, 1000 nits typical brightness, and 3000 nits peak outdoors. Apple says a nano-texture finish reduces glare and minimises the visible crease, and claims roughly 50 percent more display area than the 18 Pro Max.
The outer 5.4-inch OLED (1398x2034, 460ppi, 120Hz) covers more than 90 percent of the screen area of the 18 Pro, so closed it should still work as a normal phone rather than a cramped ticker.
Build is Grade 5 titanium for the frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield front and back, and IP68 to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Open it is 5.2mm thick; closed it is 11.3mm and 254g. That is heavier than any slab iPhone and noticeably thicker folded than a Galaxy Z Fold-class rival — the price of two battery cells and a hinge.
Touch ID moves to the side button. There is no Face ID, presumably a casualty of the thin-foldable engineering.
Cameras, chip, and battery
The rear system is a 48MP Dual Fusion pair: 48MP Main at 26mm f/1.6 plus 48MP Ultra Wide at 13mm f/2.2. There is no telephoto, zoom tops out at a 4x optical range and 10x digital, and it skips the variable aperture from the 18 Pro camera. Fronts are a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display plus an under-display FaceTime camera inside. Video runs to 4K at 120fps.
Four Duo-only camera features lean on the outer display: Smart Take fires the shutter when everyone is posed, Duo Preview shows subjects a live preview, Kid Cue plays animations for children, and Duo FaceTime lets nearby friends join a call. Cute, and plausibly useful for parents.
The A20 Pro (2nm) pairs a 6-core CPU Apple claims is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro with a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, backed by 12GB of RAM. The dual battery — one cell per side — is rated at up to 24 hours of typical use and up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display. A 60W USB-C adapter reaches about 50 percent in 20 minutes; MagSafe and Qi2 both charge at up to 25W. It ships with iOS 27 including Split View and a reworked StandBy, with USB-C Apple Pencil support promised later this year.
What it means for South Africa
Apple has not confirmed SA pricing or local availability windows. At $1,999 before shipping, duty, and retailer margin, expect a number well north of R40,000 — first-gen foldable money, not upgrade money. If you buy grey-market at launch you will also be first in line for any hinge, crease, or battery surprises.
The rational play: wait for hands-on units, wait for iStore pricing, and see whether the crease and the 254g folded bulk bother you in person. The 18 Pro remains the safer expensive iPhone; the Duo is the interesting one.
Early verdict
On paper the Duo is the most ambitious iPhone in years and the most compromised: superb displays and silicon, a camera system deliberately held back, and a price that demands faith in a first-generation hinge. Score is provisional at 7.5 pending hands-on testing — the hardware earns excitement, the price and the unknowns earn patience.
